Perry is the daughter of actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. In the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as as seen through flashback) her mother portrayed Jackie Harris in two of Perry's first TV roles. Perry did not decide to explore acting as a profession until she reached the age of adulthood due to her parents being worried about the detrimental impact stress might be a cause of. Perry claimed that she was nervous to be an actor at the age of 16, but she began doing shows at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring to the university from Boston University. Perry, after graduating from Boston University, moved into New York in search of acting roles on television. She landed small parts on shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homelessness brought her back to California for theater roles. Her mother and she appeared on Broadway as a couple for the play The Other Place, in 2013. The show featured their father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry starred in the drama's nine episodes from 2016 on the ABC drama The Family. In 2017 she had her own recurring part on The ABC drama about politics Scandal which starred her father. In the same year, the actress was selected to play a young model of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again portraying a younger version of her mother's character. She was cast in the role despite having a close relationship with the character's family.
